China Design Now

China Design Now

China Design Now is currently showing at the V&A in London. The exhibition covers design from 3 Chinese cities; Shenzen, Shaghai and Bejing. I went and viewed the exhibition last weekend and was quite impressed with the typographic experiments and use of colour, especially from Shenzhen. Shenzen is seen as the hub of graphic design in China. The exhibition gives a brief history of graphic design in China, the fact that it is a more recent profession there compared to the rest of the world and only recently are universities offering the option to study design.

The final room was focusses on architecture, with all the new developments being built in Beijing. Many of these developments reminded me of Dubai as they involve re-shaping the landscape and have a similar sort of extravagant aesthetic. While Shanghai and Beijing look like great places to visit I couldn’t help but feel the hidden motive for the final room was to push tourism for the upcoming Beijing Olympics. Over all the exhibition is worth a visit if you are interested in graphic/communication design, chinese culture, fashion or architecture and if you’re a customer of HSBC you can get £3 off if you buy tickets through their Internet banking!

12th Independent Games Festival

Limbo, from Playdead, Copenhagen, Denmark

The Independent Games Festival unfortunately doesn’t get a lot of main stream media coverage but I think showcases innovative ideas in interaction, game design and art.

The Forgotten Web Standard

This movie reminds me of my day, only in three minutes! I think there’s something quite beautiful, raw and revealing about it. It’s purpose is to demonstrate the process of creating a set of slides that were used in the author’s presentation. The presentation was given at The Future of Web Design by Mike Kus, […]

Design documentaries

Milton Glaser

Sometimes I forget how much I love film, a compelling narrative combined with well executed elements of composition, light and sound — though I also have a thing for hanging out in old cinemas late at night wired on caffeine. Anyway, I’ve had the fortune of having a week off between freelance contracts so taken […]

Mrs Eaves at Typo Berlin

Gemma O'Brien

Late last year Gemma O’Brien, an Australian graphic design student, executed a popular response to a university design brief based on the themes of vandalism and graffiti. She was inspired by my favourite designer, Stefan Sagmesiter, and named herself after my favourite typeface, Mrs Eaves, by Zuzana Licko. She was interviewed abut the project on […]

Microsoft unveil Project Natal

Project Natal

I just finished reading the live blog on Kotaku and watching the delayed video stream on xbox.com of the Microsoft press conference at E3. It was so much better than last year’s, one of the best I’ve seen — I think it will be hard for Sony and Nintendo to better it and they keep […]

E3 2009

The E3 begins tomorrow in LA, this year it seems like there should be a number of interesting announcements along with all the trailers (the PSP Go has already been leaked). I’m looking forward to not only viewing the new art styles, 3d graphics and UI elements of upcoming games but also finding out release […]

OFFF Oeiras’09

Sagmesiter in a dress at OFFF

I spent the last few days in Lisbon at the OFFF design festival. It was inspiring to listen to people talk about work that I have a lot of respect for, though I didn’t get as much out of it as previous design conferences I’ve been to. I think this was just because these events […]

Games as interactive art

The Independent Games Festival took place at the end of last month in San Francisco, along side GDC. The finalists are listed on their website. The games that impressed me were the ones with really stylized art, each could exist as an artistic installation even without any interaction so I imagine playing them would be […]

OnLive

onlive

The Game Developers Conference is on this week in San Francisco. One of the more interesting announcements has come from startup company OnLive — their website will feature a big announcement tonight at 2.15am UK time (7.15pm pacific time). They have developed an on-demand gaming streaming service, which essentially means you can play games running […]

Interactive public art

Cinimod are a London-based design studio involved in the creation of public interaction design pieces. I saw Beacon at the Kinetica Art fair last weekend. I thought it would make a really nice entrance piece for a bar or club. Beacon is a kinetic light installation with a mind of its own. An array of emergency […]
