Games as interactive art

Written in Apr 09 by Anthony Stonehouse Tags: , , , ,

The Independent Games Festival took place at the end of last month in San Francisco, along side GDC. The finalists are listed on their website. The games that impressed me were the ones with really stylized art, each could exist as an artistic installation even without any interaction so I imagine playing them would be even more inspiring.

The Unfinished Swan — shoot ink to reveal the landscape.

Feist, a beautiful looking physics-based platform game.

Blueberry Garden, a surreal ‘art’ sandbox game — kinda creepy!

Games as multi-genre digital content for the web & mobile

After attending the Games Based Learning 2010 conference in London I’ve come away with a realisation of what the medium is capable of and present the case that web designers should be informed and ready to implement games as another form of digital content.

Typographic inspiration

Letterpress printing creates a bite in the page

For the past six years or so I’ve been pretty obsessed with typography, among other things. I’m generally obsessed with my interests so it’s nice to find people to share the obsession with. Here is a list of my current favourite sources for all things typography related.

The Independent Games Festival unfortunately doesn’t get a lot of main stream media coverage but I think showcases innovative ideas in interaction, game design and art.

Projections

Urban Screen

Dancing light, transformation, distortion, animation, blending tangible with digital, all these things fascinate me about projection — I especially love projected type. Recently I’ve come across a few inspirational examples of projection and also some really lovely wallpapers. The amazing projection projects created by UrbanScreen. 25 years of cyberpunk

hostile takeover

It began with a fascination with the Commodore 64, an interface in to virtual worlds, that lead to my passion for cyberpunk culture — literature, games, art and music. Over the years the interface evolved, a lot more rapidly as I got older and had money to spend on hardware. I developed a strong interest […]

An artist’s visions of hell

Hell has always be a source of fascination — it exists in most cultures and religions. Many artists, designers and writers take inspiration from Dante’s Divine Comedy when referencing hell in their work — in fact it’s surprising how much influence the Italian poem has had on modern culture. I’ve been exploring visual executions of […]

The Forgotten Web Standard

This movie reminds me of my day, only in three minutes! I think there’s something quite beautiful, raw and revealing about it. It’s purpose is to demonstrate the process of creating a set of slides that were used in the author’s presentation. The presentation was given at The Future of Web Design by Mike Kus, […]
