Ban Comic Sans
The designer of the typeface Comic Sans, Vincent Connare, was interviewed on the Australian radio show ByDesign a few days ago — you can listen to the interview here. The ban Comic Sans movement seems to have surfaced again, reminiscent of the death to Helvetica movement initiated by Letterbox (been there, got the tshirt). It’s interesting how many people are passionate enough about typography to feel hatred towards certain faces, and sometimes even love.
BanComicSans.com is the hub of the campaign. Vincent doesn’t seem too phased by the campaign and in fact thinks it’s quite comical (pun intended). You can download his presentation on the history and use of Comic Sans (10mb PDF — switch on comments to view the accompanying narrative), it’s quite fun looking back at the Internet and related technology in the mid 90s as well as the use of the typeface. Vincent suggests if people want an alternative to Comic Sans they should look to Chalkboard.
