Mapping New York
I just got back from a few days vacation in New York. It was my second time there but almost felt like exploring a new city as I guess it’s hard to take the same path through New York twice.
I think the city has some amazing areas that could really inspire creativity, specifically Williamsburg, West Village and what they’ve done with the Meatpacking Initiative (recommend the Spice Market). I thought it would be interesting to take a look at mapping the city using different data sets and came across this interesting project.
Schulze and Webb have created two interesting maps of New York without a horizon, called here and there. You simultaneously see what is around you when standing at a specific location as well as getting an aerial view. It was created because they wanted empower people to be in a city and see through it — like a super power. I think it could make an interesting variation to google maps — running in real time on your phone or GPS system — perhaps a more useful perspective?
