An artist’s visions of hell

Hell has always be a source of fascination — it exists in most cultures and religions. Many artists, designers and writers take inspiration from Dante’s Divine Comedy when referencing hell in their work — in fact it’s surprising how much influence the Italian poem has had on modern culture. I’ve been exploring visual executions of The Inferno through painting and sculpture to modern interpretations in digital media. Here’s a few examples of some of the more intriguing images I’ve found.

The Gates of Hell by Auguste Rodin
One of the most interesting pieces, this giant doorway exists in two versions with an interesting story explained in this great documentary. It’s also the source of many famous sculptures like The Thinker and The Kiss.

The Divine Comedy wood engravings by Salvador Dali
The Black Cherub, The waterfall of the Phlegethon and Lucifer are 3 of 100 wood engravings by Dali.

Dante and Virgil in Hell by William Adolphe Bouguereau

The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch

Unholy Communion by Wayne Barlowe
One of many images from Barlow’s Inferno.

Dante’s Inferno game from Electronic Arts
An XBox 360 and PS3 action game that although didn’t review particularly well serves as an enguaging interactive environment that lets you explore a modern twist on Dante’s Inferno. It’s almost a shame you are forced to fight it as it’s quite beautifully created purely from a visual perspective.

  1. Ed Cox says:

Gustave Dore’s Inferno illustrations also good

  2. Ya, he’s got some really nice work. I think his illustrations of Inferno aren’t as nice as some of his darker representations from the Bible though.

Web design trend predictions for 2012

A year ago I posted web design trends for 2011, many of which evolved to different extends throughout the year and will continue this year. So here are my 2012 predictions for trends in visual design for the web.

Designing outside the rectangle

New UI design opportunities are becoming available as we adopt 3D technologies, augmented reality and gesture based control. Screens will evolve from rectangles that we look through, in to destinations we can move in to. While augmented reality enables the user interface to exist along side the real world.

Ampersand Conference 2011

Brighton, Friday June 17, 2011 — one of the first conferences devoted specifically to web typography. I still find it hard to believe we’ve finally reached this era. Designers can now use a wider variety of faces and apply typographic control to HTML using fonts that have been specially designed for screen use. It’s certainly […]

Moodboard development

The design process always requires some sort of image based research. Ideally this takes place at the start of a project, with one of the primary outcomes being a mood board. Other outcomes will are often a visual audit of existing design, a competitor analysis and some exploration in to the key audiences. The mood […]

The future of web and UI design

Web designers have historically had to work within a tight set of restrictions. Computer’s were restricted to 256 colours, with only 216 consistent across Macs and PCs; Keyboards and mice were the only input devices used for navigation, and; Users generally only accessed content sitting at a desk — either at work or home with a monitor. All of those restrictions no longer apply.

Web design trends for 2011 — part 2

The first quarter of 2011 is over so I start to review my predicted trends within web design, and whether sites are adopting any of them.
