I don't think augmented reality will play a large role in user interfaces or websites in 2012, but <a href="http://www.thewanderlust.net/blog/2011/10/24/designing-outside-the-rectangle/" rel="nofollow">in this previous post</a> I explored predictions for it's use and think it'll become a trend over the next few years as hardware advances. I do see it becoming popular in digital advertising and casual gaming in 2012 though -- all smart phones and portable gaming systems have cameras now. Although interestingly the iPhone 4S is <a href="http://www.itproportal.com/2012/01/23/apple-sell-iphone-singapore-camera/" rel="nofollow">selling without a camera in Singapore</a> as it's forbidden to take cameras in to a lot of companies due to privacy laws.

Interesting, specially the vector icons. What do you think about the augmented reality? Will we see a real evolution of it this year?

That's probably also the general opinion that people 25 years ago would have have had if they saw images of us using Facebook to share personal details and carrying around phones that could track our location? I think by the time that comes it will feel much more 'natural' than scary?

[...] With 3D relevant information can be brought in to the foreground of a space while non-relevant content can still exist but in the background. All evolving the notion of progressive disclosure. The UI integrates with content rather than just sitting over the top on a flat 2D plane. HTML5 sites have started to play with the idea of multiple planes such as the Nike better world website but games lead this methodology because they adopted gestural input and were able to render 3D environments first. Many games overlay the UI in the game world (see my previous post of user interface design for games) but the idea could be used in a film also. An audience may interact directly with a character in a film to then break out in to their wikipedia or IMDB page. They may then drag content from the TV to their table device in order to inspect closer (see my other post on the future of web design). [...]

Yes all good commentary. Understand what you are saying. Price verses value is a hard equation to get right. Where the tickets will be priced is something we are working on. The more sponsorship we can establish, the better the price will become.

Better next year? Makes me think of the difficult second album... to use the comparison of my era – will we be the Stone Roses or will we be Joy Division. We will see.

Thanks for covering the event and for coming. The debate is a good one.

Thanks for the comment Robin, I meant no disrespect by the statement and I'm sure a lot of work went in to the organisation. You'll notice I didn't say the overpriced entry was my opinion. I was simply relaying the thoughts I shared with other delegates -- professionals and students. Admittedly I could see their point when I compared this conference with the last conference I attended, the <a href="http://www.thewanderlust.net/blog/2011/06/18/ampersand-conference-2011/" rel="nofollow">Ampersand web typography conference</a>. It cost £125 for a day and was equally inspiring. That said, you're right, when compared with other big name conferences in London it doesn't fair too badly.

On inspiration versus entertainment; maybe it's just me, but having worked in the industry for 15 years I guess I've seen a lot so it's harder to get inspired than a student. For me the unnamed speakers were more entertaining than sharing content directly related to my work as a digital design director. It could also be that I've seen many of them speak elsewhere. If I had have gone to a conference like this during my university days I would no doubt have been inspired by a lot more of the speakers.

Would I go next year? Sure, I'm guessing it's going to be even better next year. My only hesitation would be if my £780 would be better spent on an alternative conference, so would do a bit more research before purchasing my ticket.

Wow! 10 points of innovation. Credit to 8 speakers, two further reviews, 200 sponsored tickets for students (free for them) and you are still writing about price. H'mmmm. A conference like this has a mid 6 figure budget. We fly speakers in, we put them up and we look after them. They give their time and names for little and no financial reward and to suggest that they entertained over being inspiring leaves me baffled. It takes 10 months to organise TYPO... I could go on. Price is relative. The previous week's Wired Conference was ticketed at +£1,400/entry. UX London has an early bird price that equals our final professional price. I certainly lack the critical distance of a delegate, but hope people will be able to compare and understand that there are many other perspectives on the matter.

Agree @ robert/anthony,

The world is shifting towards more interactive media. I think games, although 'games' should be the right word I guess, can and will certainly be used more and more for training purposes.

Thanks for the tip - didn't realise it runs lower resolution in spectator mode. I've started the game and taken a screen shot from it while playing and added to post. It's an improvement but still nothing like the PC version. Not that it's particularly bad, just that it probably needs time for the Internet to mature and compression technology to improve before it can really challenge local hardware.

These picture comparisons are not really fair. The onlive screenshot is from spectator mode. When spectating the video is decidedly lower res and as a result blurrier than actually playing the game in onlive. Re post during actual gameplay on a good connection like I have and you will not see this kind of difference in video. I call this article unfair and biased.

I was comparing the service with my current gaming platforms so think it's worth while comparing to all, including the PC and Steam? The games are based on PC versions so it's easy to compare them for that reason. Obviously a high spec PC is much more expensive, so there's going to be a massive difference in the quality of the graphics. The screen shot shown above is intended to compare the two extremes. The 360 and PS3 version look a lot closer to the PC screenshot though. I think the consoles still offer the best 'bang for buck', more so the PS3- especially as you can pick one up for just over £150 now. There are definite advantages of onLive and I was given a console today for free so quite happy using it to leverage those advantages. :)

I think the consoles still offer the best ‘bang for buck’, more so the PS3- especially as you can pick one up for just over £150 now. There are definite advantages of onLive and I was given a console today for free so quite happy using it to leverage those advantages.

Don't think it's fair to compare the service - which is clearly meant to compete in what is currently the console market - with high end PC gaming.

@ Aneesh

Actually if you read further down that wiki article, you can see how the terms are applied to cinema, which are different from those applied to theatre (as you describe). The approach to these terms in cinema has naturally transferred over to games, due to a lot of the same concepts being used (we have a camera, we can show the player where to look, we can edit the experience). Diegetic = in the game world, non-diegetic = outside the game world.

It seems that the original meanings of "diegetic" and "mimetic" have been reversed. "Diesis" narrates, whereas "mimesis" demonstrates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diegetic). Therefore, user interface elements that do not exist in the game world are diegetic, whereas those that do exist in the game world are mimetic. But diegetic/mimetic is more of a continuum than a dichotomy. Some games have diegetic elements that are rendered in the style of the game world, making those elements partially mimetic. StarCraft is one example. Does the HUD exist in the world of StarCraft or the player's world? It's somewhere in between, wherever the battle commander is.

So the dimensions of the four-quadrant diagram should perhaps be diegetic/mimetic and in-perspective/out-of-perspective. The latter is independent of whether the game is 3D, since 2D "God's eye" games, like Populous, have mimetic elements.

Thanks for the comment Robert, you have some interesting posts on your site I'm currently reading my way through.. Yes, it would be interesting to work on the UI of a game -- I'm interested in all forms of interaction design and think as the lines between the mediums blur I may even get a chance at some point in the future! I don't think I have any skills in actual game (mechanic) design so can't see myself creating anything on my own though.

Couldn't agree more Robert. Yes -- I think it's inevitable that the medium of games will mature and we'll begin to see interactive narratives being used as much more than simply children's toys.

Great roundup and thanks for the links.

From your posts it sounds like you might be interested in exploring game design a bit further. No reason you can't work with game designers on their UI or work on your own game while you do web design. Or push the boundaries of web design using javascript/html5/video/sound etc. - as browsers and JS engines become more powerful the line between game canvas and web canvas will blur.

Great assessment. Either someone will create a catchy new name for 'games' that will disassociate it from child's play or, as you point out, emerging and aging designers will infuse the medium with 'adult' credibility. I see 'games' as just 3d temporal spaces that can simulate an unlimited number of situations - harnessing and heralding the potential via intuitive interface design sounds like a fun challenge for all of us.
