Project Overview
This project was based of Marshall McLuhan’s communication theory of ‘the medium is the message’. The brief was to find a message, and then a related outdoor medium on which to communicate it.   My message was a quote by Russian Nobel Prize-Winning Author, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who experienced human nature in the raw in the labour camps of Siberia: ‘If only there were evil people insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being, and who is willing to destroy his own heart?’.   I preceded the message with facts from acts of genocide initiated by leaders through out the world to prove that pure good and pure evil doesn’t exist separately as is often portrayed in fictional media. I chose to broadcast this message to screens in public spaces using media (hi)jacking (eg: train station platforms) exactly 5 years after NATO bombed Kosovo. An SMS message was broadcast 12 hours prior to the event, informing mobile phones within the vicinity that the media hijack was to take place.   The design was given a worn film aesthetic to create a mood of truth, piracy, and non-commercialism. Images of destruction and war were burnt through the messages to create impact. The typeface was set in Adobe Eurostile, originally called Microgramma from the Nebiolo foundry, which was designed in 1952. The letters are square shaped with rounded corners, producing a look reminiscent of the machinery, technology, and interior design of the 1950s, which is when the quote was written.   The typeface also has a solid, strong feel to re-enforce the power of the message. The typeface sizes were all set in sizes based on the Fibonacci sequence and followed a strict grid, to bring consistency and again to re-enforce the power of the message.
